Big Review- Scary Godmother

scary godmother Pictures, Images and Photos

referring back to holiday specials lets take a look at one of my all time, if not my very favorite specials, scary godmother: halloween spooktacular. the special is a cell shaded animated one hour long program that runs every halloween season during its withering days. now i feel a bit bad for this year because i missed the entire beginning and caught the ending (as well as narrowly avoiding getting the chowder theme stuck in my head as it blared right after the special) hopefully this special will air again either tomorrow or saturday (halloween). i missed my ritual. so lets talk about the special in detail. scary godmother is an hour long with commercial breaks meaning it actually clocks in at about 45-50 minutes which in my books its a little short but hey its longer than monsters vs aliens MPFOS. the special looks and feels like no other program because of the animation style. who you can give visionary credit to Jill Thompson responsible for amazing sandman related books like "death at deaths door" and "dead boy detectives". she also wrote a childrens book based off of neil gaimans sandman series entitled the "little endless storybook" reading this for the first time was coincidentally the first time i had a nerdgasm. she is very visionary and that special style could have been left to regular animation, but i think they went one more step out of the way just to appeal to the creativity within the source material. oh, by the way apparently there was a line of "scary godmother" childrens graphic novels before this movie, making this a comic book movie review (OH WHAT FUN!). so the special starts off promising by introducing you to some obnoxious kids and the most adorable animated little girl in the world, hannah. Hannah is like a bratz doll on crack (crackz) her eyes are like 80 % of her head and her voice is so cute it beats edward's from "rock-a-doodle".

Scary Godmother Pictures, Images and Photos

the kids are out trick-or-treating when the lead kid jimmy decides to be a dickhole and makes hannah go into this haunted house, once hannah is in this house she discovers the fantastic world known as the "fright side". inside the fright side are all sorts of crazy quirky characters for hannah to meet. i'll give you the rundown:

scary godmother: the titular character is a fun loving at times motherly acting person. she enjoys all the simpler things in life like, carving pumpkins, dancing, and... well thats pretty much her range. sometimes she freaks me out. like in the scene where she gets mad at harry for eating all the desserts, she almost was like a really angry mother. and really angry mothers are scary. if momma aint happy, no ones happy.
Mr scully pettibone: the gay stereotype of this movie, mr scully is the chef, he sings showtunes, he acts really flamery and then the special just kind of ends. he is a skeleton and a rather boring one at that since nothing he really does pushes plot points. but in this special i dont think anyone pushes anything of a plot point. and also why are most skeletons gay in pop culture? its weird... definetly something to look into.

bug-a-boo:
bug-a-boo belongs where the wild things are no questions. he looks like a Maurice Sendak creature. he has a bunch of eyes, a mouth that goes from ear to ear, and horns. bug is an under the bed monster. sort of like monsters inc only all he does is scare kids and theres no real benefit from it. i think he gets off on it.
harry: screw harry because whenever he is on screen i want to shut the special off and never watch it again, he is an over dramatic werewolf who is an attention grabbing jerk. also for some reason he is always hungry, and i dont know if thats because he is a werewolf or just because its stupid.
the vampires: i have nothing to say about the vampires because i hate them. orson especially who almost becomes hannah's love interest or something. its dumb, an hour long special does not need a love interest between to little kids... this isnt my girl. still i have to admit the design on them is okay, i like their twisted bodies which almost remind me of nosferatu.

scary godmother Pictures, Images and Photos

so thats the "broomates" as godmother calls them. each has their own perk and each is pretty watered down, but that doesent mean its still not a great special. actually, a witch, a skeleton, a werewolf, a monster and some vampires... why not add a ghost cat? oh... they have one. thats like hitting two birds with one stone. this special is so ridiculously Cliche' they should have called it; "scaryotypical cliche' halloween Schlocktacular" that would have at least readied me for the large amounts of halloween myth that was to be stereotyped. and its not parody, i mean not all of it. throwing aside the cliche elements and the somewhat annoying characters the special has a lot of meat and superb humor. there is one scene for instance where the bullies are deciding on a new leader, when they vote they all vote for themselves (with exception to the boy and girl who vote for each other and dont vote for themselves as well) so then they play rock paper scissors but all keep choosing rock. the humor in this special is appealing in the sense that its awkward and tongue in cheek. it seems to have its own visual take on halloween and i like that. it doesent try to be the next best thing but rather becomes its own special kind magic. its one i watch yearly, from 2003 to now. i hope it becomes a tradition with cartoon network to air every year (hasn't stopped'em yet) forever but you never know.

there was a sequel special entitled "scary godmother 2: revenge of jimmy" but it sucked so i wont talk about it. maybe next year if i catch it i will do a full review but i just dont remember it well enough to care. anyways, have a great halloween, i will be back tomorrow to review one more movie, and then again on halloween to do a full "halloween retrospective" based on 2009's season'o'scares until next time (tomorrow) this is leatherman signing off!

Monsters Vs Aliens: Halloween Special

remember holiday specials? like the "he-man and she ra christmas special" or "the great pumpkin. thank god we live in a world with Holiday specials done right. point in place monsters vs aliens: mutant pumpkins from outer space.

Photobucket

i only just heard about this special today, so you can imagine how ecstatic i was to watch it. basically because the original film had such a tongue in cheek spin on the sci-fi genre and all of its cliche', i thought, a halloween special would mean that they would use that same genius to find the humorous cliche in horror movies. and they did. the special takes place after the movie (and i guess after "bobs big break") as the whole cast returns to play their respective character. and thats really nice because "penguins of madagascar" has no original actors. so plot? well i guess alien pumpkins land in modesto and susan, dr cockroach, link, insectosauraus, and bob have to go stop it. all the monsters have one reason or another for being excited to return to suburbia for halloween. susan wants to see her parents, bob wants candy, link wants to scare little kids, and dr cockroach... well.. i think he just wants to chillax.

Photobucket

so everyone kind of runs wild until all hell brakes loose and this evil pumpkin named wicked jack starts wreaking havoc on the little neighborhood. it isnt until later that we figure out feeding it candy makes it grow and that becomes the prime objective is to make it bigger and bigger and bigger... for... some reason. okay so i dont understand the weakness but hey at least they tried.

Photobucket

so yeah the monsters get the neighborhood kids to throw candy at the monster so it will grow, the monster crushes one of susan's parent's decorations, susan gets pissy, knocks wicked jack's head off and then insecto is like BOOOOOOOOOOOOM and eats it or some shit and candy rains on the neigborhood. the special ends with some tried and true humor that the original movie sported.

Photobucket

this special is, well special! i havent seen a holiday specific special that wasnt part of a seasoned show. its got great humor and has a really good satire on the horror genre. jokes include a reference to children of the corn (cleverly subbed "children of the candy corn"), and a really good reference to the "halloween" film series that i wont even ruin for you. overall if this special gets shown again this halloween season, set the reminder make some popcorn and tune in. its one not to miss. while halloween season is welcoming its final days, its nice to see something encompassing the entire holiday in just 30 minutes.

11 days of halloween- basket case

ahh welcome to the eleven days of halloween. i love halloween season, its just, great. its the only time of the year i want to watch people get disembowled, decapitated, or any other gruesome deaths starting with a D. but in the mix of horror movies i have found one that seems to be, unique. lets talk about brotherhood, lets talk about caring for your little brother and protecting him no matter what. lets talk about basket case. basket case Pictures, Images and Photos

basket case is exactly the kind of movie i want to watch as soon as october 6th rolls around the calender. why october 6th? idk...... anyways, basket case is about this guy who is a deranged sociopath bent on killing 3 doctors who seperated him and his siamese twin brother, his father wanted the siamese brother (a deformed lump of flesh) to die within this operation but, no go! the brother lived and now they are out for revenge. i am so surprised at the fact that this is not a "full moon pictures movie" or a "Troma team release" someone else is making derranged shit like this too! this is exactly the type of movie those two companies would release. the gore scenes are nothing but the brother rubbing blood all over the victims face and growling. but its so cheesy that you cant look away. i cant wait to see the sequels and who knows maybe they might pop in one of my other reviews this month. but for the 11th day of halloween i choose basket case.

DVD: 5 out of 5 if you get the something weird release (something weird is known for releasing "scare films" and gratuitous pornography) i unfortunately cant talk much about any other releases.

The Brothers Grimm i love this movie so much it shows the darker side of fairy tales and you need to add this to your collection today like now. youll love it too

The Blade Series

Ok Wesley Snipes KILLS other vampires and hes a MOTHERFUCKING hybrid half human half vamp how fucking cool is that but now they change theyre weaknesss on us its silver(werewolf), garlic, and UV light(last 2 are still the same at last) but its just kick ass in general and some of the weapons and twists in the plots ive seen these at least 10 times already and im still shock at what happens

LASTLY

Kids in The Hall

kids in the hall Season 1

You may probably know that i absolutely cannot stand sketch comedy shows. i especially hate sketch comedy shows gone bad. thus is the case with undesirable crap like Mad TV and even some later SNL stuff. the problem is it is all pretty much watered down and unoriginal. the parodies of popular movies, or tv shows get really stale quick. thankfully theres one comedy troupe that fails to succumb to bad jokes and corny punchlines, the kids in the hall!

ok ok, so yeah, some of these jokes are actually really bad. its probably a good idea to call this show hit and miss. because there are some super bland jokes in this series. for instance the guy with the cabbage for a head. totally lame. the two geralds... actually i really liked that one. some of these sketches will have you staring at the screen blankly. its like your supposed to laugh... you just dont know when and before you figure out when the sketch is over.

the cast is magnificent and i consider this to be the canadian monty python (monty python is my favorite comedy troupe) dave foley(sky high), kevin mcdonald (lilo and stitch), bruce mcculoch (the director of stealing harvard) and two other guys whose names are to tiny for me to remember. but, i still love them. its just those five guys to, i mean occasionally there will be an extra filling in as a characters wife (but usually one of the kids plays a girl) or some children in a school scene or
what not. but most of the time its just 5 guys doing absolutely surreal comedy.

KIDS IN THE HALL Pictures, Images and Photos

so what are my favorite sketches? well i really like the "explore scott" sketch, its sort of like something you would see if you popped in a gay version of girls gone wild. its so surreal and unsettling that it makes you laugh nervously and i love it. another one of my favorites is "can we keep him" where bruce finds a stray business man and keeps him as a pet until he must release him back into the number crunching world, again very surreal. if i had to choose a third favorite to talk about briefly i would have to go with the one most people remember. the head crushing guy. if you have put your fingers close to your eyes and made it look like you were crushing someone in the distances head, then you already know its funny, but imagine a guy, kinda foreign, doing this just because he has nothing better to do, and there you go. you have an iconic comedy piece like *snaps fingers* that!

so what does it boil down to? about 5 LOLs in each episode, 12 nervous laughs, and about 6 minutes where you stare at the screen blankly because nothing funny is happening. the DVD set is great to and it has my favorite feature for someone like me who doesent have a DVD remote. automatic scrolling episode list! after i finish one episode it will automatically scroll to the next on the list instead of staying in the same spot. gotta love it.

if you can find this set for a price like i did definetly pick it up. its funny and very surreal, if your into that sort of thing.

"explore scott"

The Doll Master (인형사 Inhyeongsa)

"Five young people are invited to a remote doll museum to be models for dolls. Here they meet a strange doll maker in a wheelchair and several other people. The five young visitors later find that they all came from the same village, and all know a common story: A doll has its own spirit. Then one by one, each is mysteriously killed. The last few survivors find out the truth: dolls do have spirits, and they have come to settle some old scores." -wikipedia

The Doll Master, a creative Korean horror movie for people in love with dolls like myself will really make you look at your doll in another light. The basis of the story was based on that all dolls have souls. I myself collect the dolls in the movie which are shown in the picture. I am probably the biggest chicken in the world when it comes to horror movies but when I heard of this movie with Ball Jointed Dolls I just HAD to give it a try.

The movie started out nicely, it gave nice foreshadowing in the beginning that would tie up the loose ends in the end of the story (if you paid attention) and slowly went into the story. I thought that it wasn't terribly scary just very bloody and more over depressing.

Though it is stated that these dolls are decades old, its rather that these dolls are modern Asian Ball Jointed Dolls. I own three of them, they are expensive high quality resin artistic dolls. Everything from hair, eyes, body parts and make up is customizable. For more info on them Den of Angels is a great place to go if you're interested.

Continuing back to the movie, the story went on into how one of the girls who was at the museum found her old doll Mina as a spirit and the doll believed she was abandoned and wanted to be with her owner. It really went into how humans neglect a lot of things that lose value over time.

The character eccentricities were fun to, you had a little bit of everything from the outcast to the dumb blond. Though ultimately like any other horror movie quite a few people were killed by the end.

My biggest downer was I couldn't find anywhere other than youtube that had a subbed version of this movie since it is in Korean, the subbed version on youtube is 7 seconds off and it really took away from the movie, I'm trying to find my own copy of it so I can upload my own version for people.

For people who are terrified of dolls...this may not be the best movie for you, but for those who collect these dolls, it really shows you another side of them. So I give this movie a 4/5 and would watch it again any day.

Here is the trailer of it, non subbed but shows some ideas in it.

Until next time

Saw IV- my totally F*cked up adventure

ripped off

today i was looking around in video one for something cheap and entertaining and i came across something that intrigued me. something that screamed:

"JAMES! BUY ME!"

now normally i dont buy yelling DVD's (its just creepy when they do that) but this saw IV collectors edition was a no pass. why? because it was totally F*CKED up.

let me first summarize totally F*CKED up for you. TFU (for short) is a new series in which i find really jacked up dvds and review them. i have a hunch that i will start finding a lot of these at video one, which is like... a graveyard for DVDs. so... anyone see that awesome movie SAW? yeah... the one with the gripping story, melodramatic characters, and nailbiting traps and gore? saw IV is nothing like that, its the creme de la shit in this film series. no wonder this copy i bought looks like its been run over by a bulldozer. lets start off by looking at the amazing slip case.

ripped off

as you can see it has a lovely picture of a disembodied head, and blood splatters that are actually part of the cover itself. what you dont see is the thick layer of dirt surrounding the outer edges. i actually dont have much to say about this part because its the least F*cked up of the bunch. so the slipcase gets a pass. i wish i could say the same for the inlet.

ripped off

have you ever gotten a book wet? and then let the pages dry only to have them become crispy and stale? yeah someone left this thing in the rain, i have no doubt in my mind that this very copy of saw IV was left out in the rain, that explains the crispy inlet, that explains the mud, that explains the smudged film cell.

ripped off

the film cell! oh how i have always wanted a film cell! and look at my very first one! aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ewwww! it looks like someone threw up on it. actually i kind of want to frame it. you know what? i am going to frame it! i mean its my first film cell, and, part of my film collection, and it did something in its existence so..... why not?

ripped off

which brings me to the final piece.. the disc! the most important part of any DVD purchase, and the most scratched up disc i have ever owned. actually its not bad so far it has played through fine... but that was on my good DVD player, i havent tested it on my POS player. however this item like the others was caked in dirt mud and a toothpaste style... crust. nasty...

so really thats it... its just... dry. and not normal dry like at one point it was really wet, and know it is dry. the disc is scratched up, the fim cell looks like the wicked with during the whole melting phase, and the case is really awful. like i cant even put the disc in it without making new scratches. if anyone wants this disc i might consider selling it on ebay. because it is (for now) the most F*cked up DVD in my collection. and it needs a good home :) until next time.. keep F*cking up DVDs, so i can buy'em. ;]

Top Ten Favorite Animated Shows

hello leatherman here, and my macaulay culkin MESS has come to a bitter end. now i know i never finished the event, but i realized that all the movies i could have reviewed would be better suited for another time. so to make up for my dumbassedness i have decided to put together a top 10 list of my favorite animated shows. what kind of cartoons do i like? CHECK OUT THE LIST SON!

10. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

this show is like watching the animated adventures of a someone high on PCP or some other crazy drug. seriously there is absolutely no continuity in this show. shit happens is the best way to describe it. seriously, stuff happens, people yell, and i feel great after every episode. its like watching someone dumber than you try REALLY REALLY hard to figure out a problem, all you do is sit back and laugh.

9. HomeStarRunner

am i cheating with this one? hell yes. but nothing makes me laugh harder than, a terrific athlete, a mexican luchador, and a sad arthouse rhinolaphant, WTF? alright so this (web)show is really weird but ultimately surreal. and totally worth checking out.

8. Beavis and Butthead

uh huhhaaha uuuuuhhh haha huh haaa

7. doomed megalopolis

doomed megalopolis (which i am doing a full-in depth review of) is a truly crazy, and graphically inspiring anime that has no boundaries. on the verge of being put in the "hentai" category i saved this one from going down that road. obviously anime has taken a toll from being adult to children over the last years but this cult classic anime does'nt seem to make that jump. and i cant bring it up without mentioning that there is a monster with a penis for a tongue. did that get your attention? are you still trying to get the joke in number 7? are you even reading right now? doomed megalopolis, totally F*ckin awesome.

6. Pokemon'

dont laugh at me (STEPHEN!) but i love every installation of this epic masterpiece of anime. undoubtedly the most famous and money making anime ever, this series has straight up BALLLLLLZ. its still going today! this is stuff i used to watch when i was in 4th grade. and know sitting upon the throne of high school i still watch it! granted i perfered the original 120 (mighta been 150) pokemon' i dont care that now there are like 4,567 new ones. i even saw the first movie with so much hype (and no-one forgets the first time they pee themself unconsioussly *spelling*)pokemon was a vital *spelling* part of my childhood and it remains as a strong part of me now. well not strong because thats kinda nerrrrrrrrrdy.

5. Rugrats

i remember watching an episode where phil said to poop in a toybox because chucky was getting potty trained. i am going to give you an example of now vs then you ready?

now: *light chuckle*
then: *hearty laugh, throws cup, spits on screen*

holy crap that was funny! just the idea of a little kid pooping in his toybox is so funny!!!! i mean what? who scripted that. now there werent many other episodes as strange as this one but c'mon, that alone makes it worthy of getting on the list.

4. Super Mario World

no other show based off of a video game got it right except for super mario world. i loved everything from the game soundtrack, to the fact that it takes place in like, a cavemanified version of the mushroom kingdom (dughhhhhh yoshi is a dinosaur)EVERRYTHNG now granted this show might suck a little. but it was a good show, especiially since i played super mario world religiously as a kid. i was the king of the game, and the show was my trophy.

3. Thundercats

oh thundercats, i never watched thee as a child. but i'm making up for it now. thundercats was kickass back then (i think) and its kickass back now! (lame) i love the theme of this show and the great action. thats really all i have to say, that and cheetara is a hot feline female GRRRRRRROWLLLLLSNAAARF.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog/satAM

leatherman?
yes?
didnt you already talk about this show?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
because sat/AM is actually a completely different sonic the hedgehog show. its got a gripping story, creative characters and really catchy theme song. the show was one of the few i watched as a kid that actually had a deep story but every episode didnt rely on the last one. this way a new viewer could come to the series on any episode and enjoy it. it worked and it got alot of m y friends hooked using that angle. the show was great and sally (even though she is a chipmunk) was a hot animated.... chip...munk. (immmma dork)

1. He-Man

ok you probably already knew this, but he-man and the masters of the universe is my favorite animated series ever. i love the stories, i love the characters, i love the morals, and i love the animation. the series is definetly memorable too because when i snuck downstairs to go watch Super Mario World, early in the morning, sometimes it would be this show. incredibly pissed off that it wasnt SMW, i still was not going to ignore the fact that i woke up way to damn early, so i watched it. and it was alright... watching it nowadays, i love it, and i love all the reboots the series has gotten. hell i even love SHE-RA the little girls he-man spin off. he-man and the masters of the universe. i have the power... do you?

-well there you have it my top 10 favorite animated shows, my hands hurt.

Macaulay Culkin Month: The Good Son

the good son Pictures, Images and Photos

i like to start off with a bang. let you know something horrible is about to happen. macaulay culkin stars as straight up devil spawn in this not so thrilling 90's thriller. and elijah wood (who is my favorite child star) plays mac's cousin. so what is this movie about? EVIL! HIGHWAYS! DEAD DOGS! CLIMBING! i pretty much explained it all right there... or at least those are all the things that will actually "thrill you".
to be completely honest i love this film. its one of my favorites, and its the only of mac's i actually felt proud of myself for buying. the movie is about a young boy, mark (elijah wood) who's mother has recently passed away. mark's money grubbing father goes to japan for two weeks and leaves mark with his uncle, aunt, and two culkin cousins. yeah i said two, because this is a culkin TWOFER! mac's real sister quinn culkin actually has a bit as the young sister of henry (mac). henry is a little boy who enjoys all the sweeter things in life, like, realistic highway dummies, nail guns, dangling your cousin from an extraordinarily high tree house etc. life is sweet, until mark has had enough of this evil. i really mean it. this film sells mac as an evil grade schooler!
what follows is mac getting away with everything as mark tries to tell his uncle, aunt, and therapist what mac has been doing. the movie goes from normal to just insane. ending in one of the most sickening climaxes i have ever seen. now i know i said that this movie is'nt all that thrilling... but thats because i have seen it at least 12 times. and the first time i saw it i knew the ending (thank you dad BLAGHH). but to a good son virgin this movie might actually be thrilling. personally its not. but it is entertaining as hell. watching that young elijah wood is really fun. i love elijah wood, and a little bite size version of him is even better.
Remember Forever Young or North. Elijah Wood Pictures, Images and Photos

all in all this movie is brilliant definetly give it a watch. its one of mac's finest. although its not his best, its definetly on par with "party monster" in the entertainment aspect. give it a watch you wont be dissapointed.

DVD SPECS: a big thanks to 20th century fox for releasing this in a double sided disc package. that means i actually get full screen and widescreen! the movie can be watched in english, spanish, and french, but only subtitled in english and spanish. on the disc for special features there is a 16 minute docufeaturettementary i dont know what to call it. and of course a trailer (although this is the short tv trailer and not the theatrical trailer). its a bare bones release with a little bit of meat.

WTF? what the food: Mcdonalds Angus Third Pounder

Angus Burger Pictures, Images and Photos
this
hello! welcome to WTF? what the food. today i will be reviewing the new angus third pounder from mcdonalds. lately i have been eating alot of mcdonalds food, and enjoying. which is disgusting considering... well the food is disgusting. but its cheap and at least edible. my favorite burger WAS the big mac until mcdonalds released the new ANGUS THIRD POUNDER. this beefy beast promised to be the answer to mcdonald's "taste crisis", and, well actually is the answer to the "taste crisis". i have had 3, one of the bacon ones, and two of the "deluxe" ones. i have not had the mushroom and swiss thing, basically because i think mushrooms and swiss cheese are icky. so, its impossible for me to review that one.

BACON AND CHEDDAR: this was the first of the ANGUS burgers i had, and i can honestly say that i was dissapointed. the size of this thing alone got me excited, truly this was a burger that meant business. the cheese was melty as f*ck, and the bacon was dry though. the first couple of bites were satisfying but as soon as i got into the toppings, the taste changed from new to processed in a heartbeat. this burger had no taste different than a regular mcdouble and it suffered because of that. the bacon was not even different because i had to pick it off. it was like bacon jerky. which is nasty.

DELUXE: this is the showstopper. the one i am actually addicted to right now, i have had 2 of these and already i can taste a huge improvement over mcdonalds other processed meals. the meat is covered lightly in salt and pepper, it comes with krinkle cut pickles, red onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, and lettuce. both times i have had it the meat has been juicy and delicous, never dry. which was different for a burger i like at Mcdonalds because usually one out of two times eating it the meat is dry (still waiting for that to happen). this is the go to burger if you hate mcdonalds food. it tastes like a regular burger from anywhere else... only put together faster. bottom line, this is unlike any mcdonalds food i have ever tasted. its better, more quality, and i dont feel like a slob after eating it.

OVERALL: the burger is great but make sure you stick to the DELUXE. the other two dont seem as win win as the main attraction. make sure you try this before they move it off the menu.

2nd review: persepolis

Persepolis Pictures, Images and Photos

like i said before, comic book movies are hard to do. and its not often that the writer of the book actually wants a movie in the first place! sometimes they are afraid that the movie wont live up to the source material. thankfully "Persepolis" is directed by Marjane Satrapi, who, also wrote the book. The animation looks just like the book and has a similar feel.

Since this is an animated film, it really was not hard hard to stray from the source material. characters are themselves and you didn't have to go pick from stockpiles of actors to find one you could slop up and turn into someone else. and i think this is the correct path to take with a film like Persepolis. With a voice cast featuring iggy pop, sean penn, and gena rowlands, this french film really pushed its american release. it was even nominated for "best foreign language film" (golden globes). it was up against the fantastic "ratatouille" for best animated film. and runner up to a disney movie is as close as you will ever get to winning. the plot is not hard to understand, its a coming of age story set in iran during the islamic revolution, she goes to france, she comes back home, she grows up, etc.

is the animation annoying? someone asked me this one time... its in black and white. the majority of the movie is in black and white because ALL of the comic book was in black and white, and again, this film has stuck very close to its source material so to not disturb the die hard fines of the book! all i have to say is wow. thank you! so many times comic book movies stray from where they came from but this one is pure panel to screen. so do i love this movie? yes! i love everything about this film. it was the main reason i became so interested in the islamic revolution. i was learning about how it must have been going through it and not just what happened. and for that this film gets my perfect 5 rating.

"Ugh, self introductions are always the hardest things to write! I tend to read more that I watch anything ,so expect a lot of book reveiws, or you know, British television-- I'm a sucker for BBC. Anyway, reading wis I mainly stick to fantasy and Sci-Fi, but Philosopy and religion find their way into my library. I'm a simple creature, I love the arts-- reading, writing, dancing, music and I think my personality reflects that. Mostly. At least my writing does. So, I think at this point, I'm rambling (Nasty habit of mine, terribly sorry about that) which usually means it's time to stop. So that's me pretty much."

Anime Review: Princess Tutu プリンセスチュチュ

While the title Princess Tutu can be misleading into a childish feminine anime, these are only small factors in the story Princess Tutu.

This story is a fantastic mixture of the elegant and beautiful world of ballet. The anime takes a signature form of  Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, while many of the stories include elements of fairy tales and famous ballets such as Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker.

The anime follows Ahiru (or Duck in the english adaption with her name Japanese name translated) a duck who has been turned into a young school girl who attends an art academy as a ballet student, and her efforts to restore the heart of her a classmate named Mytho by transforming into Princess Tutu (who ultimately is similar to Swan Lake's Odette the White Swan). The anime goes into the results of her actions and how they affect her and those around her, in particular Ahiru's classmate Rue, who is in love with Mytho, and Fakir, Mytho's childhood friend. Rue is also Tutu's rival known as Princess Kraehe (and similar to Tutu being the equivilent to Odette, Kraehe is the representation of Odile or the Black Swan) the daughter of a raven. It becomes apparent that Ahiru, Rue, Mytho, and Fakir were meant to play out the roles of characters in a story written by a writer named Drosselmeyer, a man whose words were said to come true and when he died his hands were cut off in fear of his power, but the characters begin to resist their assigned fates and they fight to keep the story from becoming a tragedy as Drosselmeyer wished.

I thought the story would solely be fluffy, cute and annoying because of the name, and it was cute which I enjoted but while I love ballet I thought it would ruin the name of the art, but the anime only added to it in a creative way. The ballets were portrayed with class and the story had a dark mystifying feel to it especially during the second season. This 26 episode anime is well worth the watch and time especially for dancers. I personally found my love for ballet again through this and anyone male or female should enjoy this anime.

This anime music video not created by myself but by Marissa Panaccio sums up the anime perfectly and was the reason I began the series in the first place. (This AMV has won "Best Action" and "Best of Show" from Anime Boston and "Best Freeform" from Fanime.)

So with a spare moment, Princess Tutu should be added onto the list of "Must Watch" animes and I give it 5 stars for creativity and proving its name wrong with a dark nature and the expression of beauty in ballet all at the same time.

Until next time...

"It's funny how every "ABOUT ME" or introduction you have to write on a website usually fails to do its job which is explain who you are. *laughs* but simple put i am the most sane person you'll ever meet? No...not by a long shot. I'm the insane dancing, occasional copslaying, ball jointed doll collector(it creeps soren right the fuck out).. how can you call that sane, but with that I'm one of the most interesting people you'll ever meet."

CLERKS 2 IN 5 SECONDS

Since i am a big fan of this film i thought i should post this video...

(NOT MY WORK BTW)

1st Review: TANK GIRL

tank girl! Pictures, Images and Photos

A good comic to movie transition is hard. we have seen it done well (spiderman) and we have seen it done badly (steel). but where exactly does tank girl fall in? the original comic was basically just a series of random events, and last time i checked random events hardly make up for a plot. lori petty plays the tank girl, rebecca, and she is sassy, rude, and kinda sounds like tommy from rugrats. naomi watts plays jet girl, who meets tank while they are both being held captive by the water and power company. see its 2033 and some meteor hit earth... and theres no more water. malcom mcdowell plays the main villain who wants every last drop of water for himself. Squashed in there are mutant kangaroos, a tricked out tank, and ice-t sporting some bad marsupial makeup. so basically tank and jet must stop malcom mcdowell (who's character name i cant remember). its basically heroes versus villains.
Now the film does sport some suprisingly amazing action sequences which are thrown in between each random event. when tank girl first gets a tank there is a very stylized anime sequence that pops out of nowhere and lasts roughly 5 minutes. clips of the comic are scanned across the screen to make up for not having to film more expansive scenes (my theory!) but only two full motion anime sequences are shown. this film has all the makings for a cult classic including it bombed at the box office, the strange style and random events create another universe in itself where anything goes. i would say that this is a comic book film done well. but thats just me.
It mimics the dirty style and industrial art that the comic flashed vividly. the acting is great, and some of lori petty's lines mock spunky action heroes of the 80's (like the ninja turtles). give this one a look at... its colorful, an hour and forty three minutes long, and will keep your attention. but dont buy it unless 1) your a hardcore fan of the source material, or 2) its under 5 dollars. if none of the above relates to you give it a rental.

John Hughes Pictures, Images and Photos

my my my... i cant believe it has happened. the king of 80's films "john hughes" has died at age 59 :( the director of the "brat pack" films as well as other classics such as "ferris bueller's day off" and "uncle buck" will be surely missed in the film world. immediately upon mention of films in the 80's my mind doesent shoot to "masters of the universe" (oh we will get to that one). no my mind shoots to the "breakfast club" and "weird science". i love john hughes movies... and i hope that movies in the future have as much heart as his films. with what seems like an eternity of films ahead of us its sad to think the master of modern film is gone. a director who truly knew his source material, he will be missed. rest in peace john hughes.

welcome!!
